And theres too many REALLY nice NEW 1911s out there that are better shooters. I bought a couple of nice Colts a few years back both are just too nice to shoot anymore. Too many details to list beyond this, but these are a few starters. A good, correct Colt 1911A1 could cost as much as 2500.00, and the posters Remington is easily worth twelve or fifteen hundred bucks. Untouched/non-refurbished examples will have a very dark finish. Lastly, the parkerized finish used during WWII was that of manganese, not your zinc post-war counterpart. One should see the distinctive hardening line on the first 1/3 of the slide & or slide stop when this was implemented. Refurbishments/post-war refurbishments will not exhibit a polished feed ramp as this was not deemed necessary. Over the years the polished feed ramp will take on a brass/gold hue due to brass jacketed projectiles riding its way into the barrel, so some tend to skim over it not realizing it’s polished. I have searched but hope someone here can help me decipher them. With this being said also look to ensure that the feed ramp on the frame is also in-the-white as they were polished after parkerization. I just bought this Remington rand but cant figure out what these stamps mean or where they come from. you lose the crispness to each rollmark). Refurbishment after refurbishment made every rollmark, proof mark & serial number appear more dull as the years went on as they were merely “finished” in the same manner (being refinished so many times fills in these rollmarks, etc. To piggy back off of this your firing proofs, inspection proof & Ordnance Department inspection proof should also exhibit the same attributes as they were stamped/rollmarked after being parkerized. The high edges of the numbers will show bare carbon steel, as serial numbers were rollmarked after the pistol was parkerized. A lot of knowledge goes into this subject, knowing what to look for & knowing what to feel when handling.įor example, serial numbers on untouched/as issued examples will roughly be “in-the-white” & should be incredibly crisp. Years of collecting & knowledge puts you in a place to differentiate between rebuilds that may look the part & completely, untouched examples. This means direct veteran “bring backs”, etc. I only collect untouched, non-CMP examples. Untouched, all original 1943 production Remington-Rand M1911-A1.
